Since the 2002 edition, over 200 pages of various revisions have been included during the annual reprintings. Amazon carries the latest 2009-on printings which include Boston's several page analysis of the Heller decision. (This is not some completely new edition, as some reviewers have incorrectly inferred. Three-fourths of the book remain the original text of 2002. The other fourth are revised pages from 2003-2009.)

While Boston recognizes that gun/gear prices have changed, and that a few new worthy products have emerged, he does not feel that the title yet deserves a completely revamped edition. Good basics never change, and BGB is pretty thorough about those.

If you are involved in an aspect of arms ownership that is not completely relegated to target/hunting matters, then this is the book to give that person. One problem with defensive/offensive arms and their handling, is that the entire industry of munitions as available to the U.S. civilian is made of junk, useless junk, non functioning junk, and the occassional gem. While Boston may be able to tell you in one sentence why rifle XXX is way inferior ro rifle YYY, but in this book, first and foremost, he explains WHY one is inferior. Then the 'why' is placed in the context of the legal availability of certain weapons. And from that is distilled the cream. the cream being the best available to the civilian under current regulations. If these implements are going to be such that 'you would bet your life on them' only the cream will do. You get a little 'combat rifle history' which will make you understand the importance of proper control placement, and why a rifle was designed a certain way. While the book will not nail on the head the only things you should buy, what the book will do is allow you to eliminate 90% of what is not feasible and otherwise junk. The T&E of weaponry takes up the largest part of the book. There is also a large section concering handguns and handgun ammo. I thought rifle ammo was neglected. ALso the statement that 'SS109 5.56 is a major improvement over 55 graim ball' is now proven to be wrong by its performance in Afghanistan. You then have a section on sniper rifle choice. OUt of 300 available calibers you are honed down to perhaps 10. An artcile on .50 cals. .50 Cal ammo. Night vision, I actually learned the difference between various Gen. devices. Scopes. Really every conceivable piece of fighting gear is touched upon. That is why if you read this book, you will eliminate 90% of whats out there from your vision. There are philosophical sections on the warrior mentality, philosophy, shooting, these make entertaining reading. In all, there is no book like this, and it is worth every penny but it is not the end of knowledge, it is the beginning. In other words, even though you may have narrowed your search for a tactical scope down to 10 models, you must then fill in the rest of the picture about the 10 and how they work and then train, train, and train some more.

I do have one caveat. The author is obviously and tremendously trained in almost all aspects of martial arts. Yes, shooting is a martial art too. However, to my knowlegde, and Boston makes no reference to it in anything I have read by him, that he has taken down an oppenent with karate, knife, etc., or had someone in his custody and 'under his gun', much less shot anyone or been shot at. Its not like I have either, but if Boston has one weakness, it is this. No practical combat experience. You might want to balance his book with other material by bona fide veterans, etc.

Boston's Gun Bible stands alone as the very best all-around reference for firearms owners. Not only does it cover practical rifles, pistols, and shotguns in detail, but it has a wealth of valuable information on related subjects such as optics, practical carry, training, legal issues, and legislative issues. The new expanded and updated edition (with 200 extra pages) is fantastic!

This weighty tome is an absolute MUST for all gun owners. At $28 it isn't cheap, but as I stated before in reviewing the previous edition, it is worth every penny.

Boston's observations and conclusions about guns are precisely researched, scientific, and relatively dispassionate. Unlike many other writers in the firearms field, Boston has consistently shown that he is willing to change his mind when presented with logical evidence.

This is a book that may very well save the life of yourself or a loved one. It is also a highly influential book that may contribute in the long run to the restoration of our Constitutional Republic and freedom around the world. Boston's Gun Bible doesn't just whine about the decline of our God-given Constitutional liberties. Rather, it shows practical solutions that individual Citizens can and must take to insure the liberty of future generations. It is nothing short of a monumental work of non-fiction!

Don't just buy one copy. Buy two! You will soon find that you'll need an extra copy to lend out to family members and friends.

OBTW, if you already have the older edition, then I strongly suggest that you buy the new expanded and updated edition. This valuable new information is well worth the investment.

As a published fiction writer, I stand in awe of this important piece of non-fiction. It deserves a place of honor on the bookshelf of every freedom-loving Citizen.

Boston's Gun Bible, written by Kenneth W. Royce, is scholarly and philosophical, as well as passionate, political and technical. It is no accident that Mr. Royce cites the ultra-science fiction/political satire, Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, as "one of the five best novels I have ever read". Like Stephenson's book (Stephenson is postmodern Melville) Royce's "Bible" is a collage, a pastiche, a rich simmering brew of humor, ideas, opinions, cant, rant and instruction.

Given the book's patchwork style, I think it best to review it according to themes. There are three I will consider: 1. Technical Aspects of Firearms; 2. Philosophy of Firearms;
3. Politics. Other themes which are thoughtfully developed in the 848 page book are on the laws governing gun use, women and guns, self-defense, tactics and training, combat rifle history and how to become a rifleman.

The Technical discussion is one of the strongest sections. I came to this book as a complete newbie as far as firearms are concerned. But the technical part of the book rewards careful reading. It is a complete and meticulously considered course on firearms - how to buy them, how to evaluate them, how they work, how to keep them working, etc. Of the 46 chapters in the book 22 are devoted to this one topic. In his sections evaluating various rifles and pistols, Mr. Royce, using a system he devised, rates dozens of rifles and pistols. His system employs "63 criteria...to rate the controls, features and specifications of combat rifles." And while it is true his full system is deployed only against rifles, the system itself is an extremely useful tool for evaluating any firearm, and also comparing firearms among themselves within distinct classes

The Philosophical aspect of the book is as difficult and convoluted as the Technical part is straightforward. On the one hand, this is in the nature of philosophy. On the other, the difficulty has to do with the purpose and meaning of guns in human culture. This topic has no Socrates (unless it is Nietzsche), and Mr. Royce in this book provides what is only a rudimentary outline. (In his other books, none of which I have read, he may articulate more fully his philosophical arguments.) Mr. Royce's view of human society is that it consists of a very large number of sheep-like beings, who are preyed upon by a few rapacious predators and/or bad governments. He seeks to lay out a third position: "those who refuse to be either", and offers as an example, "an armed libertarian".

The core values of the Third Way are the values of the Warrior, and in any number of ways, Mr. Royce drapes the term Warrior in the full regalia of an ancient and venerable tradition. By denying the Warrior as predator (Mr. Royce's Warrior is no berserker, no pirate, no storm trooper and no imperialist) he evokes a sterner, more finely tempered kind of life, where honor, personal responsibility and concern for others hold pride of place. Human life is intrinsically a life of struggle, and in Mr. Royce's view, a person can accept the reality of this and learn to fight, or he can flee this responsibility, outright by becoming prey, or indirectly by delegating his role to other "protectors". Unfortunately, as any reading of history will attest, the protectors all too often themselves become the predators. Only the Warrior, living a value imbued life that explicitly eschews violent domination of others, can move beyond the predator/prey cycle. The state for which the Warrior strives is that of liberty, and the life of liberty in human societies is moved by four forces, symbolized as the soap box (discussion), the ballot box (formulation), the jury box (interpretation) and the cartridge box (decisive action). In the real world, the first three do not exist in a substantive way without the fourth. And for that reason, firearms - "liberty's teeth"-are the necessary though not sufficient conditions to resist servitude.

The Political themes of this book are the most passionate, and the least organized, of all.
Royce very rightly champions the second amendment as not only the safeguard of the right of each individual to keep firearms but the major bulwark against evil doers and tyrannous governments. Scattered throughout the book are many statistics concerning the relationship between gun ownership and crime. Just in case you are wondering, when a society is armed, there is less crime. Any society which disarms its citizens AND maintains a low rate of crime, does so only by sacrificing many of what we still regard as fundamental human rights (i.e. Japan).

With respect to tyrannical governments, Mr. Royce's arguments are not convincing, at least to me. Certainly, he does have history on his side. "Death by government" was a central motif of the twentieth century, and many previous centuries as well. People would do well to be wary of governments. They would do well to be prepared to take action against tyrannous governments. The question is, Do Americans now face such tyranny? Has the time come to step off the soap box, batten down the ballot box, burn the jury box and open the cartridge box? Mr. Royce is convinced that such a time is imminent, but his arguments in this direction are flimsy. The Political side of the book does not answer to the Philosophical side.

This is a strong book, which I recommend most highly for anyone who is interested in firearms, and who wishes to learn more about any of the themes I have outlined. Owning and using guns is a method which, in mature use, inspires careful reflection, as well as considered action.

I bought this book thinking it would merely be a handy reference on firearms, so I was utterly floored by its unexpected intensity and passion. Rather than just giving you the "how", it serves up a healthy dose of the "why" as well. This deeply American book should be required reading for everyone. The writing is lucid and honest, at times funny, and the lessons are indisputable. The citizen disarmament advocates use hype and emotion to further their cause. BTP's Gun Bible meticulously dismantles their rhetoric with facts and reason. I challenge "gun control" advocates to read this book and walk away with your convictions intact.
Invaluable Reference for both the Novice and Experienced Shooter

I purchased this book soon after reading the author's first work of fiction, Molon Labe, and I couldn't be more happy with the purchase. Given all the gun media out there that competes for your reading dollar, this is about the best $20 i've spent in some time. Gun Magazines all make their livelihoods selling advertising to gun manufacturers and thus, their reviews tend to sugar-coat flaws. Not so with Boston! His evaluations are unbiased and cut like a razor. Had I bought this book before I purchased my $1400 Armalite AR-10A4 that jams at least a round or two per mag regardless of the ammo/mag, I would have saved a good deal of money and bought a FAL or M1A to start with. The book lives up to its title in that it is a compendium of hands-on researched and empirically analyzed information about firearms for all purposes, with an emphasis on home defense and defense of Liberty in general. I have read and reread the book so many times in the last 4 months that I expect I'll need to replace it soon. The poor thing is starting to fall apart; it's that solid of a reference.

Other reviewers have gone in depth to explain the contents of the books so I will not duplicate their work. However, I find it helpful to mention the three sections that have been the most useful to my interests. I was interested in purchasing a full power battle rifle (308) to replace my jamming AR-10 but given the costs involved, Boston's complete evalations of all the major battle rifles (AR-10, FAL, HK91, M1, M1A, AR-15, Steyr AUG, AK-47, AK-74) were invaluable in helping me to select a DSA Para FAL that fills my needs and goes bang every time I pull the trigger. The second area that was very useful for me was the surplus ammunition evaluation. Nowhere else have I found a solid accuracy evaluation of various types of available surplus ammuntion for 308, 223, and 50 BMG surplus projectiles. Given a battle rifle's appetite for ammunition and Boston's maxim "Ammunition turns money into skill", information ranking the accuracy of surplus ammo in various rifles alone justifies the cost of this volume. Lastly, a section of the book has a solid evaluation of the items needed and costs of getting into 50 BMG target rifle shooting. Boston provides a full evaluation of what is required (rangefinders, ammo, reloading, optics) as well as ranking rifle models previously unheard of by me and most "gun-guys". While the book definitely doesn't discourage one from purchasing a 50 BMG rifle, the text is definitely an eye-opener that these behemoths aren't for everyone, especially those without a well-rooted money tree.

Overall, Boston's Gun Bible is a very solid book (and an exceptional value) for both the novice interested in purchasing their first defensive handgun or hunting rifle to the experienced enthusiast looking to thoughtfully fill up their gun safe. Should you buy it outside Amazon, be sure to get the current edition which has been updated since the 1994 "Krime Bill" expired. The version offered here on Amazon.com as a New Book is the updated edition.

I accidentily discovered this writer when I won an auction lot of books. I was overwhelmed by his frank hard-hitting style of writing and no holds barred truth. This book is by far the best I've ever seen on guns. From the technical knowledge, little known facts/tricks, tactical information it's like a complete course in one book. Just one tip like how to use the width of your front sight as a range finder is worth the price of the book (-ie- the 8 moa width of a M14 front sight lines up perfectly with the army targets at a certain range). I received an expert marksman award in the military and believe me I never received any training about this. There is so much information presented that each chapter in itself could I think be expanded into its own book. Especially the chapters on battle rifles and becoming a rifleman. Other valuable information such as home defense, what to do in event of a self defense shooting, etc. Invaluable stuff that someday could save you or your families lives or at least keep you out of prison. I hope he continues to keep writing and expanding on this material cause I'll be buying them all.

Where to start? OK...This book has both quality AND quantity. Great bang for the buck in these times of everything costing more, and books costing even more than that.

Boston's books all have a sense of urgency that would turn into ranting in many writers' hands. But this is avoided by Boston's keen sense of organization (both on the page and out in the world, he *is* the FSW founder), combined with pretty damn good proofreading, editing and page layout, especially compared with most small press fare.

And the man can *write*. While he obviously thinks a mile a second, he still manages to get it all down in a polished way.

Being that I am a recovering liberal who used to be afraid of guns, I found this book quite an eye opener. It's not just about guns, though the gun stuff is covered and then some. (If you just want books about guns, period, there are plenty of good gun books, Massad Ayoob has written many.)

Boston's Gun Bible is very short on shotgun info (though the line about "condo beehivers and drywall" was hilarious), and not too heavy on revolvers, but Boston likes rifles and semi-autos. This is probably the best rifle book extant. And Boston doesn't cover much on shotguns and revolvers because he "writes what he knows", and he knows what he loves. He loves rifles.

If you want a shotgun book, I recommend "Modern Shotgunning" by Dave Henderson. It's detailed and sweet. Sort of feels like a knowledgeable grandpa passing on his life experience with hunting. Boston's Gun Bible feels more like it's written by your crazy uncle, who it turns out isn't crazy after all. Maybe the crazy uncle is really the only sane guy in the family, because he really understands how the world really works.

Reading this book is a direct pineal download (yes, you'll lose sleep) to the true spirit of the men who created America, men who spoke their constitution with arms. Arms not as symbols, but as actual TOOLS.

In these exponentially turbulent times where America is becoming a welfare state and a foreign country (and that includes many who call themselves "true Americans"), Boston's Gun Bible will help keep your "aim true."

When I bought this book, I was just looking for a book on target shooting and home defense. I got so much more.

Guns, as with any defensive tools, are owned and practiced so hopefully we never have to use them. But an unwillingness to push back when dragged off isn't what this country was based on. And even that has become an unpopular opinion with many of the shiny happy sheeple.

Reading Boston's Gun Bible, I'm reminded of this quote from Charles A. Beard:
"It is sobering to reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence."

If you are going to only own one book on guns, this is it. Soup to nuts on why to own a gun, which ones to buy, what gear works, you name it. The section on U.S. gun laws is worth the price of the book alone. It's 700+ pages that doesn't gloss over anything; whether he's rating battle rifles or exploding the myths of gun control, Boston has clearly taken his time and done this one "right". A word of caution for those not familiar with Boston's work- this is not a book about hunting- it's about the true purpose of the Second Amendment clause "to keep and bear arms". You might as well go ahead and order two copies, because when you read it you're going to want to share it with friend....
I have 70+ "gun books", I only travel with 1. This is it.

Yes, I disagree with Boston on a couple minor technical points (and was proud to see my "contribution" on Aimpoint optics in the latest edition), but being active-duty Army, this is the only civilian weapons book I make room in the bags for when deploying overseas. When our battalion was issued M14 rifles from storage, the class I gave on iron-sight zero procedures came right out of BGB. I'm on my third copy as it keeps growing legs, and bought copies for some of my soldiers as welcome-home gifts.

BTW, the M855/SS109 is better and punching holes in things, but you're correct in that its inferior on soft tissue. When possible here, I followed SOCOM's lead ans scrounged some Black Hills match grade 5.56 loaded with the 77 grain Sierra. Works great if you don't have an M14 handy.

This is an excellent book that covers firearms that are biased towards self defense shooting. If you are looking for a book on hunting firearms, this is not it. It is, however, a well written and reasoned book not only about firearms, but the 2nd amendment, self defense, and liberty.

This has to be Boston's best book yet! I really enjoyed his 1998 book "Boston on Guns & Courage", and this sequel is even better still. Very strong on battle rifles and carbines, gun show purchases, avoiding BATF stings, tactics and training, "gun-control" laws (past, present, and likely future), and much more. I've read it several times now, and always find something new each time I go through its 700+ pages. This book will save you lots of time, money, and hassle. It truly is a "bible" for every American gun owner! Absolutely essential reading!
An Outstanding Compendium - A "MUST" for gun owners!

This is an excellent reference book. Boston's conclusions are well-founded. The technical detail is fantastic. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is an outgrowth of his earlier book "Boston on Guns and Courage." This new tome is huge. (45 chapters.) At $28.00 it isn't cheap. But with useful information like this, it is worth every penny. There is a lot of wisdom packed between the covers!

When I first ordered this book, I honestly didn't know what to expect from it. I was expecting a rather boring collection of firearms data from every gun ever manufactured, a tedious and technical manual that would end up as a dust collector on my shelf. After reading the book, I'm glad that I didn't base my decision on my ill-concieved notions of what the book would be! A fantastic collection of information on government tyranny, technical-but-easily-understood shooting information and skills, the need for certain types of weapons along with easy to read reviews of numerous weapons that fit each category, advice on how to train, the importance of proper, perfect training, a "to buy" list of firearms, predictions for the next round of government action against our RKBA, the connection between women and firearms (and crime prevention), the book just has it all! A wonderful mix of pro-gun, pro-Constitution, Libertarian thoughts combined with a great deal of useful information about the guns that will really matter in the future.

Boston describes the main variants of battle rifles, their weaknesses, their strengths, the aftermarket accessories that are worth it and the accessories that aren't worth it. He really pushes his idea of "Ammo turns money into skill" and drives that idea home. The basic concept, turning every gun owner, Patriot or libertarian into a highly effective Rifleman, is looked at from every angle. His desire to pump out quality knowledge is visible through his frequent book updates to reflect new "laws" and new parts.

I've read books by libertarians and I've read books by gun-guys, it's very refreshing to read a book by someone who realizes that a libertarian "utopia" won't arise simply by reading the Fountainhead twice a year. Firearms truely are "libertys teeth", but for those teeth to work effectivly, you've got to know what you are dealing with, what works and what doesn't.

I recommend this book to anyone concerned with the current state of affairs in America. I've given the book to friends who's only interest in firearms was shooting their .30-.30 at a deer a few times a year, and it's convinced them to get a MBR, a few cases of ammo and head out west for some real training. If you want to understand how a group of gun-loving patriots can turn America around, purchse this book and Molon Labe, get a good MBR, go learn to shoot and stand ready.
Getting long in the tooth

Boston's Gun Bible is probably THE book every gun owner and freedom loving American should own. Few Americans truly understand the Bill of Rights and the 2nd Amendment. It's not about hunting, nor is about personal protection. First and foremost, it is to protect Americans from an overbearing government! Boston's Bible gives you the information you need to make intelligent choices in every phase of selection and use of firearms.

That said, the original edition was released in 1998. We were in the depths of the Clinton efforts to disarm Americans. He revised it in 2000 with many important updates, and revised it again in 2002, which this version happens to be. That was the last revision. A newly revised edition is sorely needed.

It's been six long years, and many important events directly bearing on firearms, their ownership and use have transpired. The gun ban expired, which opened millions to ownership of guns more evenly matched with government forces. The development of the 6.8 SPC round for combat use in Afghanistan and Iraq. Laser optics. Wartime R&D have put many new features and materials in play. New manufacturers have come; others have gone. The Supreme Court has revised laws on gun ownership. All of this needs to be accounted for in any book purporting to be a Bible. And that means timely revisions.

The other reviews here accurately reflect strengths and shortcomings of the Bible. Even as it ages, however, it is aging gracefully, and you should surely own and study religiously the most recent edition.

EDIT - ADDED COMMENT (6/30/08) - I discovered this weekend that the book has been revised and updated since it's 2002 copy right date, but because the updates are not annotated, you have no way of knowing which edition you are reading. The copy I found this weekend says, "New text for 2006" on the page facing the table of contents. In reading through sections of the book, I find comments which indicated new material. It would be most helpful if the publisher, Javelin Press, would use standard bibliographic formatting and conventions so a reader would know which date he has.
Buy it. Read it. Teach it to your children!

I have had BGB for years- both editions, and it is the single best book I have read for information on selecting defensive arms for perilous times. If one American in a hundred read ans understood this book we would have a free nation today. Great information on battle rifles- buy this book FIRST- you will avoid mistakes! There is not enough room in this review for the praise this book deserves. Just buy it- you will not be disapointed.In fact, get all Boston's books- they do repeat some info, but his Y2k book is useful even today-Katrina victims will wish they had read it long ago.
Buy the book.Read it. Buy a rifle and handgun of your choice.Vote, write, and think pro-gun and pro freedom, and maybe we will never need to worry about some of the scenarios Boston tells us about in BGB
The Only One!

This may, indeed, seem trite, but if you only buy one book about "guns," this is the one that you should buy. Many, no doubt, say that "Boston" is very pro-rights, and this is true. However, if you were trying to learn about Fords, would you buy a book written about them by a dedicated Chevy man? Boston brings to the keyboard a fascinating mix of information, stories, first hand experience, quotes, and references that are almost staggering in their volume. This is, however, the main reason that you should buy this tome. It will stand on your bookshelf as a reference manual for quite a period of time to come. You will constantly refer to it for the little questions that keep cropping up constantly over the years. It is undoubtably the only book on the subject that you will ever need.
Every Gun Owner Should Have A Copy Of This On Their Shelves.

One of my top ten favorite books period. I wore it out and had to buy another copy.

It gives a wealth of information on firearms, mags, parts, accessories, optics, camping gear, firearms training and the state of our country in general in regards to the freedom enjoyed by its citizens. If you've ever looked at a Shotgun News or at a gun magazine and wondered how well some of that stuff actually worked, here's your chance to find out by someone that actually has a sense of humor and knows how to write.

If you don't like guns, are a liberal or if you don't believe in self defense, then you should really buy this book as it might actually change your mind with its reasonable and well stated arguments.

Well worth it even if its cost was double.

I consider myself a person who knows a lot, but I also learned a lot from the Gun Bible. Although I am a highly trained police and military rifle instructor, I don't know everything. The most important thing that I took away from this long but very enjoyable read is that the rifle closest to where I sleep is no longer an AR-15. It is an M1A. Thanks, Boston.
Also, since the Heller decision was less than a year ago, I wonder, in light of Murdock v PA, if firearms licenses are not now unconstitutional?

This book is a complete overhaul of author Royce's "Boston on Guns & Courage."

This basic theme of BGB is the essentially libertarian theme linking free gun ownership with political freedom. That is, an armed citizenry are a free citizenry, and a disarmed citizenry are no more than slaves to an oppressive government. BGB contains several excellent chapters discussing this theme, and more chapters cussing and dis-cussing current American gun laws. Royce foresees future armed conflict pitting the people against the government, and in BGB he is encouraging us to obtain both the guns and the courage necessary to prevail in this conflict. Royce has little to say about potential ethnic conflict a la Chittum's "Civil War Two," but obviously the material on guns is equally valid for whichever type of conflict should actually occur in the future.

The bulk of the book is devoted to analysis of the suitability of various guns for battle, with an occasional nod toward their suitability as hunting tools. This is NOT a book about hunting (there are PLENTY of those available). Also, the emphasis in BGB is on rifles rather than handguns because, as Royce says, only rifles win wars, and handguns are merely what you use to fight your way back to the rifle you foolishly left behind.

The book also reviews tactics and training, gun gear, women and guns, body armor, etc. Military surplus rifles are extensively covered as well as modern rifles (after reading this book, I bought two "antique" Finnish M39 Mosin Nagant battle rifles, and after shooting them I can report that not only are they very rugged, but they are also quite accurate--and that I wouldn't feel underarmed if I had to rely on them in a firefight [Of course they're not ALL the rifles I've got....] One tip which the book doesn't mention, which will be of interest for Californians, is that there are two battle rifles that are currently legal in California: the M1A and the Garand. There are also at least two legal battle carbines: the Mini-14 and the fixed-magazine SKS).

This is the ONLY book in print which discusses battle guns with this degree of detail, clarity, and wit. The only book of which I know that is even similar to BGB is Mel Tappan's "Survival Guns." Tappan's book is very good, but it was written more than 20 years ago and is long out of print.

Even if you're not particularly interested in guns, you should buy this book for its political discussion. After you read it, I can almost guarantee that you WILL become interested in guns (unless you're terminally liberal, and in that case I encourage you NOT to buy a gun. Heh, heh!)

...P>Boston's Gun Bible, written by Kenneth W. Royce, is scholarly and philosophical, as well as passionate, political and technical. It is no accident that Mr. Royce cites the ultra-science fiction/political satire, Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, as "one of the five best novels I have ever read". Like Stephenson's book (Stephenson is postmodern Melville) Royce's "Bible" is a collage, a pastiche, a rich simmering brew of humor, ideas, opinions, cant, rant and instruction.

Given the book's patchwork style, I think it best to review it according to themes. There are three I will consider: 1. Technical Aspects of Firearms; 2. Philosophy of Firearms;
3. Politics. Other themes which are thoughtfully developed in the 848 page book are on the laws governing gun use, women and guns, self-defense, tactics and training, combat rifle history and how to become a rifleman.

The Technical discussion is one of the strongest sections. I came to this book as a complete newbie as far as firearms are concerned. But the technical part of the book rewards careful reading. It is a complete and carefully considered course on firearms - how to buy them, how to evaluate them, how they work, how to keep them working, etc. Of the 46 chapters in the book 22 are devoted to this one topic. In his sections evaluating various rifles and pistols, Mr. Royce, using a system he devised, rates dozens of rifles and pistols. His system employs "63 criteria...to rate the controls, features and specifications of combat rifles." And while it is true his full system is deployed only against rifles, the system itself is an extremely useful tool for evaluating any firearm, and also comparing firearms among themselves within distinct classes

The Philosophical aspect of the book is as difficult and convoluted as the Technical part is straightforward. On the one hand, this is in the nature of philosophy. On the other, the difficulty has to do with the purpose and meaning of guns in human culture. This topic has no Socrates (unless it is Nietzsche), and Mr. Royce in this book provides what is only a rudimentary outline. (In his other books, none of which I have read, he may articulate more fully his philosophical arguments.) Mr. Royce's view of human society is that it consists of a very large number of sheep-like beings, who are preyed upon by a few rapacious predators and/or bad governments. He seeks to lay out a third position: "those who refuse to be either", and offers as an example, "an armed libertarian".

The core values of the Third Way are the values of the Warrior, and in any number of ways, Mr. Royce drapes the term Warrior in the full regalia of an ancient and venerable tradition. By denying the Warrior as predator (Mr. Royce's Warrior is no berserker, no pirate, no storm trooper and no imperialist) he evokes a sterner, more finely tempered kind of life, where honor, personal responsibility and concern for others hold pride of place. Human life is intrinsically a life of struggle, and in Mr. Royce's view, a person can accept the reality of this and learn to fight, or he can flee this responsibility, outright by becoming prey, or indirectly by delegating his role to other "protectors". Unfortunately, as any reading of history will attest, the protectors all too often themselves become the predators. Only the Warrior, living a value imbued life that explicitly eschews violent domination of others, can move beyond the predator/prey cycle. The state for which the Warrior strives is that of liberty, and the life of liberty in human societies is moved by four forces, symbolized as the soap box (discussion), the ballot box (formulation), the jury box (interpretation) and the cartridge box (decisive action). In the real world, the first three do not exist in a substantive way without the fourth. And for that reason, firearms - "liberty's teeth"-are the necessary though not sufficient conditions to resist servitude.

The Political themes of this book are the most passionate, and the least organized, of all.
Royce very rightly champions the second amendment as not only the safeguard of the right of each individual to keep firearms but the major bulwark against evil doers and tyrannous governments. Scattered throughout the book are many statistics concerning the relationship between gun ownership and crime. Just in case you are wondering, when a society is armed, there is less crime. Any society which disarms its citizens AND maintains a low rate of crime, does so only by sacrificing many of what we still regard as fundamental human rights (i.e. Japan).

With respect to tyrannical governments, Mr. Royce's arguments are not convincing, at least to me. Certainly, he does have history on his side. "Death by government" was a central motif of the twentieth century, and many previous centuries as well. People would do well to be wary of governments. They would do well to be prepared to take action against tyrannous governments. The question is, Do Americans now face such tyranny? Has the time come to step off the soap box, batten down the ballot box, burn the jury box and open the cartridge box? Mr. Royce is convinced that such a time is imminent, but his arguments in this direction are flimsy. The Political side of the book does not answer to the Philosophical side.

This is a strong book, which I recommend most highly for anyone who is interested in firearms, and who wishes to learn more about any of the themes I have outlined. Owning and using guns is a method which, in mature use, inspires careful reflection, as well as considered action.

Boston's Gun Bible is by far the best reference book I have read, Gun related or otherwise. This book is a must have for anyone with any interest in guns, be it a weekend shooter or serious collector. Out of all the gun publications I have read, this one is by far the most practical, helpful and easy to understand that I have read. Even the most technical of topics are easily understood. Reviews and comparisons of equipment are based on practical topics and are given without bias. Includes everything that every gun owner should know and understand, from shooting to buying/selling/trading, legal issues, et al. Having read various technical publications across various fields, I have yet to find anything that equals Boston's Gun Bible when it comes to the vast amount of information that is contained in one book. Excellent.

BGB is an amazing compendium of everything you need to know about guns, scopes and mounts, the anti-gun (i.e. victim disarmament) crowd, self defense, the 2nd amendment, and much more.

Boston is as passionate about guns as he is knowledgeable, which makes this a book that is hard to put down. His analysis of .308 battle rifles alone is worth the price of this book. Unlike many who rate guns, Boston doesn't just talk about them, he goes out in the field and shoots thousands of rounds down EACH of the many guns he rates, then gives a comprehensive analysis of their weak points and strong points.

He picks apart the 'gun control' lobby, exposing the cowardice and hypocrisy that is at their core.

At its essence, this book is about the defense of liberty and freedom.

Boston's Gun Bible is the most comprehensive book on guns that I have ever seen. There are chapters on gun safety, gun laws, tactics and training, and on what to do after you have used a gun against an assailant. Boston breaks down the history of combat arms and then goes on to modern weapons. There are several chapters where he rates the best rifles out there today, giving their pro's and con's, so that you can make an informed decision on which one(s) would be best for you. Rifles aren't the only firearms he discusses. Handguns and shotguns are discussed in detail as well.
Everything you need to know about guns, ammunition, and shooting accessories--short of what you would learn at the firing range through experience--Boston teaches you all in this one book. It's a great deal. This information is worth the book's weight in gold--and these days that's saying something.
The last half of the book is focused on a responsible gun owner's relationship with society and government and is full of excellent advice. You'll be able to tell that the subject was well researched and that the author has plenty of experience. Put that to work for you. Everything is presented in a way that is easy to understand.
Whether you have never fired a gun in your life or you're a seasoned pro, whether you are a man or a woman; this is THE book to buy if you want to know anything about guns and gun employment.
I'm a marine scout sniper, and I learned a few things from it too.

Boston has written a very definitive work on the capabilities and workings of most small arms manufactured today as well as the laws that bind us. Boston explains the importance of owning firearms as well as why we should train with them. He has given their strengths and weaknesses without undue bias or favoritism written in a style of writing that actually makes the reader (gasp) WANT TO READ. I have read the book several times being entertained and educated every time I do so. He has educated and inspired me to buy my first rifle and I recommend this book to anyone. Buy the revised edition if you can get your hands on it.

Boston's Gun Bible is a valuable resource for anyone with the least awareness of the nature of our increasingly compromised liberty. Our elected officials pay a lot of lip service to the notions of liberty under which our once proud nation was founded, yet plot daily on how to strip the public of yet more of their freedom. In this sad state of affairs, the aware individual will see that at some point, the last shreds of the Constitution will inevitably be swept away, and that they must therefore decide now which side they will be on at the end of our republic: the side of the enslaved, or the side of the spiritual descendants of the minutemen who fought at Concord & Lexington green. This book is the manual for those who wish to be on the side of the right [which may or may not be the winning side in some future conflagration], but who have little time or money to waste learning things the hard way.

Even if you're as yet undecided as to your support in the fight for freedom this is a valuable read, as while it focuses on the practical, it also has some philosophical arguments that strip away the sophistry of the socialist left.

Last revised in 2002, this book is overdue for a new edition, if for no other reason than all the prices and the bulk of the URLs are hopelessly out of date.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in the realpolitik confronting the patriotic U.S. citizen.

While I was naive enough to think that I knew a lot about the subjects he covers - I definitely learned a surprising amount of new information, and it contains a great number of valuable reference sources. There was something new, or adding to my own established views, on almost very page. Regardless of the writing style - IT IS A GEM and a real TREASURE of information. I wish I got as much VALUE from just a fraction of the books I have purchased. Having read it, I would value it as being (at a minimum), WORTH at least twice it's cost. If you are at all interested in gathering information on the subject of guns - BUY IT.

I have recently revived my childhood interest in shooting. I looked around for a good general topic book and kept finding this gun bible highly recommended. I have now read the entire thing and feel immensely more knowledgeable about guns, shooting, and 2nd Amendment issues. I really hope Boston is overly paranoid about the future of this country, but you cannot fault him for being prepared. This book has really opened my eyes to the possibilities and gotten me thinking in new ways when it comes to my liberty and being prepared. Thanks Boston. Whether you know nothing about guns, or think you know it all, this book will surely enlighten you.

It begins appropriately with a chapter on safety and handling guns. From there it goes on to chapters about self-defense and tactics. Following that there is information about any type of gun that most people would be interested in owning.

Being female, I particularly liked the chapter about Women and Guns. Great information for women are have decided to be armed, but need to be informed first.

This book also covers just about everything you'd need to know about the legalities and politics of gun use and ownership.

Written in an entertaining and captivating style, you can't go wrong with this great book.

This book...rather a benchmark manual, is extensive to say the least. I can not imagine how boston even compiled this mountain of details, real world performance and "consumer reports" on what seems like every known rifle man has devised, but some how he did! This is truely a complete reference guide to long arms. but don't forget shotguns & pistols too. Truely what works and what does not. Every prudent responsible firearm owner needs this manual, tactics,Law,maintanance,citizen disarmament,history,jeez he put eveything in here.

Wow... what a highly informative book on firearms available today!! It addresses current uses of each item addressed and future applications if the political realm changes for the worse. I know it should be veiwed as a "usesrs manual" accompanying the Second amendment of the Bill Of Rights. No knowledgeable and responsible gun owner should be with out one. Need a quick referance for a legal question? How about advice on what firearm to purchase next. What kind of reticle should you choose for a scope? Why have governments sought to disarm people? This book is an outstanding referance. It makes no claim to be the final say on any of these subjects, but instead, is a primer of sorts on all things firearm related.
Frankly, I'm amazed I have gone this long in life without the valuable resource.

Boston's Gun Bible is overflowing with information for gun aficionados, covering many topics usually untouched. However this book might be even more valuable for those just beginning to acquire firearms in it's extensive guide to purchasing. (I wish it had been written before my first firearms purchase.)

Must reading for anyone with a serious interest in guns or self-protection.

This one of the few books that I'd pay the premium for a hardcover!

Whether you are an experienced shooter or a neophyte to the world of arms, this book has something important to say to you.
A substantial portion of the book is meticulously prepared testing and evaluation of handguns,longguns, and ammunition, EXPLAINED in concise, real world context. Boston has done all your basic homework for you. All that is left for you to do is to decide what features apply to your needs, make some intelligent purchases, and start DOING. There is more relevent "how to" information contained in this book than any book in my library. Want to become a rifleman? Have trouble deciding on the right caliber of pistol for self defense? Don't know how to talk to the gun control crowd in a meaningful, factual manner? Can't decide on the kind of optic to put in front of your aging eyes? Boston has the answers that only an experienced shooter and firearms instructor can offer. I have given this book to several friends and will continue to do so. Most of them have gone on to purchase and enjoy other titles by Boston, particularly "You and the Police"

This review has been a long time coming. I should've written this when I first got the book brand new from Paladin years and years ago but alas, I hesitated until now. When I first got the book, I read it front to back. I had decided to get it after reading "Boston on surviving Y2k & other lovely disasters". I was hooked from that moment on. The sheer amount of information contained in "Boston's Gun Bible", coupled with the massive amount of insight from someone who obviously pracitces what he preaches is a true help in times when most authors "fly by night" with little information and lots of "it's been reported". From the sections from what catridges are the best choice for "X" game/2-legged critter, to the CCW laws of various states the guide covers literally everything. If I had any complaints to make, it would be: 1.) I'd like to see a post-ban (I love the fact that I can say that cosmetic law sunseted...) version of the book, 2.) A little bit more of reloading information, 3.) Tactics (Reloading, calling for fire/communication. 3.) An expanded version of ergonomics for us south-paws. I would highly reccomend that anyone interested in the past, present and future of our beloved "hobby" pick this book up. Support a fellow Patriot and someone who cares about your rights, even if he does/doesn't agree with your beliefs.

Boston's Gun Bible is a very informative reference for almost everything relating to firearms. Boston offers advice and reviews for a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to): handguns, semi-automatic rifles, bolt-action rifles, shotguns, sights, optics, scopes, rangefinders, night vision, ammunition, knives, self-defense tactics, laws, regulations, and rights. Not afraid to state his opinion and back it up with facts and figures, he does a good job of separating fact from philosophy, and extensively covers both. Boston's style of writing puts an unwritten "and I mean it" after every sentence.

Boston's Gun Bible is partitioned into five parts. Part I begins the book from the ground-up by first defining a number of terms. Next comes a review of basic firearm safety, followed by a review of self-defense scenarios, defensive tactics for a number of situations, and a chapter dealing with guns and tactics specifically for women.

Part II exhaustively (and I mean exhaustively!) covers many semi-auto 'battle rifles', like the M14/M1A, FAL, and AR10, and battle carbines, like the AK74 and AR15. Boston not only numerically rates each rifle against tens of individual criteria, but elaborates (sometimes extensively) on each. Part III covers all other types of rifles, handguns, and shotguns with the same detail.

Part IV covers the acquisition of firearms, whether through private sales, gun stores, or gun shows. Boston hits many of the caveats associated with firearms ownership, as well as recommends a number of items for immediate purchase. A chapter is devoted to the practices, operation, and jurisdiction of the BATF. Boston also covers how to inspect firearms prior to purchase, and how to haggle a fair price. Reloading, cleaning, sighting, and shooting are all covered in the last chapter.

Part V and VI mainly cover topics like firearms rights (and rights in general), regulations, and disarmament. This is done as concretely as possible through commentary, recommendations, research, essays, news clippings, etc.

When it comes to firearms and self-defense, Boston certainly knows what he is doing. Boston's Gun Bible provides valuable information, confident recommendations, and an uplifting philosophy. This book is definitely worth its cover price. I highly recommend it.

Boston's Gun Bible is a detailed and enlightening history and overview of responsible gun ownership in America. It comments on a wide range of topics from the law, the history of battle rifles, women and firearms, equipment reviews, tactics, practical instruction and political philosophy. The book is especially relevant today in light of increasingly centralized governmental control of individual lives, even if some of the legislative references may be affected by subsequent legislation. There is so much information packed into it that it will probably be read by me multiple times and serve as a reference and guide. While there are some minor typos and awkward phrasing, I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in self defense as an inalienable right (and their friends), but you really had better read it quickly before you're prohibited from acting on its valuable information.

I am a collector and have read & collected a lot of books, especially ones that are unavailable 'on the shelves' at regular retail stores. There is much more to learn from them than only the censored pablum available to the general public.
This must be due in part to political correctness of content & another unnoticed way to keep actual true & relevant information unavailable to the general public. Unfortunately for americans who otherwise do not know, access is then available only by word of mouth, which then has to involve a special search & online order for something such as this book.
It is fascinating reading. Detailed reviews & info on guns not seen anywhere else along with thought provoking ideas, commentaries and philosophies every american & gun owner should & must know.
I would consider it a 'must read' above all other gun books out there, & I highly reccomend it.
The author has another book, a novel that is referenced below that I also highly recommend also as a 'must read' for the same reasons.

I am new to the world of guns and the 2nd Amendment, and I could not have asked for a better introduction than Boston's Gun Bible. If the love of freedom inhabits even the tiniest corner of your being, buy and study this book -- and witness your transformation into a real patriot.

It has the technical details you need to make informed firearms purchases, but it is the essays on freedom and the importance of safeguarding the 2nd Amendment that are the book's real gems.

I will be referring to this for a long time to come and re-reading large sections of it frequently. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This is not a light read, it's a very detailed up front look at the main military rifles of the world and their pro's and con's. Gives the reader tactical reasons for owning firearms, not simply for collection or plinking, but real world reasons to own military pattern rifles and their various uses. If you are remotely interested in military rifles, precision shooting, the 2nd amendment, the preservation of freedom, and/or your own self preservation then this should be required reading for you, your children, your grandchildren, etc. Great book, well written, well layed out, and full of very good information.

If you are new to the world of guns or have shot and handled rifles and handguns for decades, this is a book you must buy. Add it to your library. I have constantly used mine as a reference source. It is jammed packed with useful information gained from experience. Boston tells you what guns and accessories to buy and what to avoid. It's better than a five year subscription to Guns and Ammo magazine.

Overall a very informative book. I'm sure it'll be on the liberals' burn list early on, so get one while you can. Then read it. At least twice. Then do what the man says!!

I've read BTP's Gun Bible, You & the Law and One Nation, Under Surveillance. The all scared the crap outta me, so I'm getting off my duff and preparing.

The man has obviously done a ton of research and analysis on what are the best defense weapons. My favs weren't on his list, but I appreciate his efforts.

BTP... when your next edition comes out, I'm buying it... if I still can.

If I had to choose only one book on the subject of Guns AND their relationship with Liberty it would be this book. It delivers more insight with every read and takes on more depth as the readers' experience grows. It also speaks equally well to both the novice and the expert.

In other words, it is truly a "Bible" on the subject.

I was so impressed with earlier incarnations of this book, that when the latest edition of Boston's Gun Bible came out, I immediately bought three copies from Boston himself.
Not only is BGB the definitive reference book/shopping guide on weapons/gear T&E. Besides being chock full of practical advice on weapons selection, it also contains dozens of rousing and fiery political tracts on the importance of the 2nd Amendment and how the RKBA is interconnected with our tradition of liberty. Boston makes convincing arguments that we are at the crucial crossroads at this point in our history and that only by successfully defending our 2nd Amendment Rights, will we have a chance at not only preserving the few rights that are left us. But that it will be the catalyst for taking back ALL the rights that have been stolen from us by an increasingly despotic goverment which rules by decree rather than by consent of the governed.
BGB is a must read for not only those interested in guns (though politically aware gunowners should buy a copy for every one of their 2nd Amendment fence straddling acquaintances) but it should be required reading for all concerned Americans who believe that ALL the liberties ennumerated in the Bill of Rights are our inviolable birthright.

It's about being a Patriot and returning America back to the land of the free.

Off course there is a vast wealth of knowledge in here covering many, many weapons and all the correlating ammunition. Use it to wisely choose a weapon or three. There are defensive tactics, gun safety issues, politics, philosophy, some necessary ranting and a few attitude adjustments to boot. This is a must read for all Americans, not just us members of the gun culture.

The overiding theme of the book for me was preparedness. BUY THIS BOOK, use the information to learn as much as you can about guns and related issues. Take heed, and stand tall.

Just finished reading Boston's Gun Bible and found it to be as good and well researched as his other books I've read. He really goes into great detail on many different types of firearms and his expertise is apparent. What I particularly liked was his comparisons and opinions on firearm choices based on one's own personal situation. He also offers some good insight into many of the other issues related to the owning and using of firearms. Whether or not you agree with his opinions and views, he has the ability to make you think about the things he writes about. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in firearms.

This was the first "Boston T. Party" book I bought. I am not flush with money so I don't buy many books these days. In less than a year my copy is tattered, dog eared and has MANY pages marked. It is THE book of battle rifles and the chapters about creeping gun control and what you should do about it are worth the price alone. If you are thinking of buying a battle rifle BUY THIS BOOK FIRST so you don't make a mistake!! If you love freedom and understand how guns are what preserve freedom buy this book for the chapters on that subject. My favorite chapter is "Boston is NUTS!"

This is probably one of the best books that I have ever read that called itself a gun bible. It has excelent information on almost every aspect of the gun culture. The author is well versed in the subject, and utilizes a style of writing that flows very well with the subjects. He is quite opinionated but backs his opinions with the facts that led him to it. I belive that all true gun enthusiasts should have a copy of this book on their shelf.
Boston's Gun Bible is both a bible and an Encyclopedia.

I just finished reading (the newly revised) Boston's Gun Bible. Without doubt, it is the most comprehensive, pertinent, and informative collection of firearms, firearm related techniques and accessories, buying and selling advice, tactics and training, and "Self defense and the Law" ever assembled in one publication.
Being a professionally sponsored pistol, rifle, and shotgun competitor for over 15 years, I found the chapters on Tactics and Training especially informative. I'm rethinking a few of my home and vehicle "gun placement strategies" based on his advice. And I heartily agree with his emphasis on "Front sight, press, front sight." If you can only remember one thing, that's it.
The section on rifle selection quickly and accurately breaks down the essential components of selecting a rifle for defensive use. This chapter alone would make an excellent book, (and be worth the book's list price), as indeed would all the major chapters in Boston's Gun Bible.
Whether you're a beginner looking for buying advice, an experienced warrior or a seasoned pro - get it - you will benefit from Mr. Boston's knowledge.

Boston's Gun Bible is great, regardless of your comfort level with guns. It is informative for those who have no clue, and deals with the attitude as well as the equipment. It is invaluable for those who have been around guns for years, even decades.

I'll not say I agree with everything in the text, but a large part of it for certain. There are some bits of opinionated difference, as to be expected. He won't just say "Do this because I said so", Boston will say "Do this because of these reasons:", and that's the greatest benefit of this book. A thinking individual can read the book, decide he doesn't like the recommended equipment, but will be able to find something else that will do the job just as well, because Boston will explain why he recommends what he does.

Get the book.

This book is NOT intended for hunters or competitive shooters. It IS a patriot's book; heavily political (i.e. libertarian). It is designed to be a militia man's gun reference book.

Aside from the two aforementioned subjects, the only other topics this book does not adequately cover are shotguns and (for some) pistols. It covers nearly everything else you can imagine, however: which states are gun friendly, why most gun laws are ineffective, which guns are good purchases, how to reload ammo and zero your sights, how to act at gun shows, etc. In addition, there is A LOT of excellent practical advice in this book, some of which very well may change your life. I think it's just about impossible to express how amazing this book is.

That said, the book is not without flaw. Aside from the copious typos, the author is clearly a nutbag with some paranoia issues. One can tell he's obviously an older guy, somewhat of an eccentric, with a lot of money (a lawyer maybe?) with VERY strong, rigid opinions. He obviously loves guns and expects his readers to love them as much as he does. All of this should be kept in mind when reading.

That's partly because some of his advice is absolute garbage. He seriously recommends people buy a $2000+ battle rifle for their first gun instead of the FAR more reasonable suggestion of a .22 rifle. He advises people to avoid using their 'gun hand' when in public in case they need to draw their carry pistol in an emergency. And his advice concerning certain gun purchases being too expensive is 'Fine, but how much is your life worth?'

As a reference book, source for (usually) good gun advice, source for political inspiration to become part of the militia, this book is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. As long as you keep in mind the obvious lifestyle biases that cloud some of the author's suggestions, you will get A LOT out of this wonderful book. We're utterly blessed to have someone as knowledgeable and wise as Boston to have written this stellar book.
Can I give it six stars?

"Boston's Gun Bible" is, without a doubt, the very best book on firearms ever published. It is what a gun book SHOULD be: practical, honest, comprehensive, logical, intelligent, up-to-date, witty, accurate, and downright ENJOYABLE to read. (I swear I could NOT put it down for three days straight.) Jam-packed full of insightful information and analysis, this is an absolute "must have" for novices and professionals alike.

So what's in it? If it has anything to do with firearms, "it's in there." There is WAY too little space here to provide a synopsis of the subject matter contained within, but suffice to say, every subject is presented with the honesty and intelligence only Boston can deliver. I would like to say that I especially liked his Kepner-Tregoe analysis, in which he down-selected comparable firearms using a quantitative ranking system. (The analysis alone would be worthy of a graduate thesis). But don't let this intimidate you; despite his intellectual (yet practical) approach to firearms, the book is very "hands-on" in every respect, and an easy (and extremely enjoyable) read for anyone interested in guns.

Boston, you really out did yourself this time. I can honestly say you rank right up there with the best of them (Jeff Cooper, Clint Smith, etc.). You're a true American.

Boston's Gun Bible may be the definitive reference work for those who understand the true meaning behind the Second Amendment, which is to guarantee, as a last resort, the ability of citizens to defend their lives and liberty through asymmetrical warfare against a tyrannical government. Those who want to take the necessary steps to prepare for the worst would be well-advised to purchase this book and consider its advice. Those who DON'T see any reason why it's necessary to be armed and ready to defend their rights should ALSO buy this book, as it will describe the dangers facing you and perhaps wake you from your slumber.

With a refreshing sense of humor and a tone that ranges from easygoing to earnest, Boston provides a solid overview of just about every gun-related subject imaginable while going into extensive detail on certain topics (especially the advantages and disadvantages of various rifles). A historical overview of military weapons is provided, along with a detailed analysis of the major battle rifles and carbines currently available in the United States. Rifles such as the M14/M1A, FAL, HK91, AR-15, and AK-74 are given ratings (with justification) in numerous categories and subcategories. While this ratings system is necessarily somewhat subjective, Boston does a fine job of translating his experience and that of many others into a formal analysis that is perhaps as close to objectivity as one can expect.

One recurring theme is the superiority of the general-purpose, semi-auto .308 battle rifle over assault rifles (which Boston calls "battle carbines") firing 5.56 NATO, 5.45x39, and especially 7.62x39. I generally agree with Boston on this, although his observation that the .308 is better at penetrating cover must be qualified in the case of some kinds of body armor: readily-available steel-core 5.56 NATO is classified as a higher armor penetration threat than the lead-core 7.62 NATO (roughly equivalent to .308 Winchester) commonly available on the civilian market. I understand that there is also some debate among shooters and ballistics experts as to whether FMJ 5.56 bullets actually cause MORE damage than FMJ .308 at close ranges. (For hunting deer, of course, the .308 is better, but then you probably wouldn't be using a FMJ bullet for hunting.) Nevertheless, I agree that the .308 is the better overall round, as it does penetrate most battlefield cover better and can be used to fight beyond the range of assault rifles. When you're outnumbered, the last thing you want is to be up close!

You'll also find plenty of material on subjects such as bolt-action rifles, the .50 BMG, how to properly set up a scope (and which optics are the best), night vision devices...really, just about everything you can think of is here. Perhaps most important of all, however, is the "Don't Tread On Me" attitude Boston attempts to inculcate in the reader. We Americans have gotten so accustomed to having our rights trampled upon that one can hardly imagine an armed resistance taking place for ANY reason short of having all of our firstborn children slaughtered by jackbooted police-state agents. Boston reminds us that we have no rights apart from those we're willing to fight for -- to paraphrase him, they'll let us quote the Bill of Rights all the way to the camps. Hopefully we'll never need the information this book provides, but the time to prepare is NOW. For those who aren't sure where to begin, this book is probably the best place to start.

If you are a gun owner or have ever considered owning a gun, this is the definitive resource for you. Before you buy, sell, or have any further dealings with firearms, you owe it to yourself to read this book!

I've read several of the other pro-gun and Second Amendment books offered by such noted authors as Bracken, Ross, and Rawles. They are all excellent works in their own right. However, Boston's Gun Bible (BGB) differs from all of the others in that, it is a purely non-fiction and factual book, based on detailed research. No gun-owner's library should be without it.

Buy this book and read it. You will not regret it.

I got this book due to recommendations from many excellent websites and other authors whom I know to stand for Freedom and Liberty as established by our Founding Fathers and the many excellent riflemen who fought the Revolutionary War and all the men who have fought in subsequent wars to preserve our Constitution. What I got was a super bargain for the price. It is enlarged from the original by some 200 pages and reads so fast and easy that it is phenomenal. He gives the reader a good Index of terms/acronyms that you will use. It is located in the front of the book and is easy to refer back to when necessary. Aside from that, this guy gives you history, heritage, explanations on WHY we need to protect ourselves, especially from over zealous liberals who want to remove our 2nd Amendment Rights and who keep bogging us down with "Regulations" in effort to try and take our guns away. You get reviews of rifles, handguns, shotguns in as much depth as you could wish for from a man who knows what he is talking about. He brings in views from "experts" in many areas and topics to back up what he is trying to explain to you.

You cannot go wrong with BTP. He's right for every FREEDOM LOVING person in the U.S. If you are a Liberal and are against anyone except the police and military having guns, then you are going to find yourself very much abused in this book for being already enslaved and under control of other people who think they know what is best for you, regardless of what you think about it.

I must emphasize one very outstanding focus BTP makes in this book. He has a fully detailed section for Women and how they need to protect themselves. He helps with gun selections and other protective means.

Lastly, he gives you resource referral information on where to go to get what, things to watch (videos, movies), books to read, and important names/addresses/contact info, website addresses, etc.,on other resources including within the government. This is a super resource and learning book that is very timely in this day and time when it looks like we may be faced with some kind of issues in self protection/survival from terrorists, bad governmental agents, or people who want to bring you and your family harm. It will lift your "Freedom Loving" spirits in showing you how YOU can survive and how you MUST protect yourself and your family. I find myself picking it up and rereading here and there all the time. It is almost a daily thing to review something or some section in my Gun Bible and get Boston's views on it again. I found this as one of the best ever books I've ever owned and it is definitely very inspirational to this old Constitutionalist who feels that his freedoms are slipping out from under him very fast in this day and time.

Boston's Gun Bible is well written and full of useful information. The first part of the book has many chapters of useful information comparing calibers, rifles, and carbines. The comparisons are for many popular guns and are done in a head to head fashion, broken down into the classes of rifles and carbines. There are also recommendations as to purchases. The later chapters deal with what the government has and has not done to the public and gun owners in particular. There are numerous quotes and references throughout the book that make points and bring up questions and answers. The style of writing is easy to read and Boston keeps your attention, even during the political discussions.

Let me make it plain and simple. If you are an American, you are not a fascist or a communist, and your not an illegal immigrant or a supporter of a one world government, then I think this is the book for you.

Every American who is not one of the following has a duty to read this book, and properly assess the information and take Bostons multitude of advice. I am so glad there are writers out their like Boston T. Party who are doing a service by helping combat all the liberal fascist propaganda that is currently pervading modern academia and the media, brainwashing the masses into becoming "sheeple" (a half breed between a person and a sheep).

If you want to know how many countries made the sks, and which are quality, and why they should not be converted to full auto, this is the book for you. A very readable reference book with the numbers, grain counts, cartridge lengths, conversions, you name it. A better name would be "The shooter's Bible" because there is a lot of personal observations and evaluations of different types of weapons. What you don't see in the picture is that it is nearly 2 inches thick. My brother in law opened it once and stole it from me. So I ordered another one for my self.

Great book! I bought these as Christmas gifts for a couple of my friends. I was talking with one of them about some of the info about which parts to stock up on for which guns. After unloading a ton of info that I got from the book, my friend asked, "How old is this guy?" I said "I think about 200". I don't know how Boston got all of this info into his head but he did. We're lucky for it. You could read this over and over and then reference it whenever you need to check data on something.
A must read for any concerned patriot!

I recently purchased my 3rd copy of this book. The previous 2 copied were loaned out to friends and I am going to have a hard time getting them back without a fight. The author covers just about every aspect of gun ownership, storage, accessories, training, maintaining firearms, ammunition selection, optics, etc. If you are relatively new to shooting or are considering purchasing a firearm, I would suggest that you buy this book FIRST. It will save you time and money in the long run by avoiding costly mistakes (e.g. junk). No gun owner should be without this reference.

I had read several reviews from Amazon and other sources on this book. My goal was to find a good, straightforward firearm reference. Boston's Gun Bible met that goal. The author makes no pretense of his recommendations being the 'right' answer for everyone. To the contrary, his views are 'take them or leave them'. Definitely a must for anyone wanting that extra bit of information.
Absolutely a must-have for anyone interested in Firearms, Freedom or wary of any abusive government.

If this book was twice as much, you would still be getting more than your money's worth. Abundant in practical, tried-and-true, no-nonsense firearms information and plenty more. I wish someone would have put this book in my hands when it was first printed. As a matter of fact, I wish someone could have put this book in my hands 20 years ago.
As a side note, everything I have read from Boston T. Party is excellent. I am a fan.

boston's gun bible is the grestest value out there. for a few increasingly devalued frn's you can get all the information you need to effectively arm your self, and enough information on what to do/ how to do it from there. get informed, get training, get practicing. it might be a rabid cyote, a burglar or a foreign/domestic enemy, but some day you'll be glad you read this book and took action!

Boston T. Party certainly covers all the bases on this one ! Pretty amazing book, when you consider the wide range of topics - battle rifles, preparing for TEOTWAWKI, a love of the .308 cartridge, the threat of an all controlling goverment, being armed to the teeth 24/7, gun politics, the lack of Patriots, circumventing the law, etc.

I consider myself pretty well armed, but Boston has a arsenal. Not many can afford such weaponry. But, to his credit, he includes a section on how to arm yourself on a budget, and he continually emphasizes that you must have a large amount of ammo, all the guns in the world are of absolutely no use if your ammo cache isn't up to snuff.

He downplays shotguns and handguns, he likes rifles and to a lesser extent carbines, and he loves to tell you about them! His book also describes the power of the overlooked hunting rifle, a good bolt action .308 or .30-06, with a nice scope is a deadly weapon. The bolt-action rifle doesn't get much attention these days, with everyone overloading their AR 15's with lights, red dots and other gadgets but if you are out in the wide open west, or rural farm land a good scoped rifle will dominate over any AK 47, or AR 15.

A lot of political discussion in this book - gun laws, the ATF, the FBI, Waco, Ruby Ridge, the danger of the Federal Goverment and it's frequent abuse of power, you name it . . . it is all talked about in this book.

Become a Rifleman! Be prepared, and stay vigilant !

I recieved a copy of this from my thoughtful brother. It is all things guns. Many subjects are not exhaustively covered, but Boston is generous with his conclusions and provides reccomendations to complete the research on your own. Although I have always felt that the second ammendment was important, this book helped me understand why. I have some fence-sitters in my social circle. Boston presents a cerebral, articulate argument for gun rights.

I noticed other reviewers complain about Bostons writing style. HUH? Hundreds of pages of dry material became interesting as I read it through the authors eyes. Boston held my attention on the subject of MATH! Something public schools couldnt achieve. The amount of research compiled in one place will save you a lot of time and money. Boston is unapolegetic about his opinions. I noticed he calls them as he sees them. He even bruises some of his peers because he feels obligated to tell it like it is. (Jeff Coopers scout rifle)I like that. Thats right. a Peer.

I find myself reading and re-reading this book. I think Boston could even write a cookbook that I would enjoy. Are you out there Boston? i have one suggestion. Could you digitally pass out "A letter to a columbine student"? this chapter alone is worth the investment. If it was passed around the internet many people would be surprised to find out how pro- gun they really are. I am positive it would boost book sales as well. And come on! Boston T. Party hooked me with this book. I have since purchased a few of his other books, but being a gun nut, this is hands down my favorite. It is actually my favorite reference book for firearms, period. It helped me get my first quality M1 Garand. It helped me choose my first pistol (A Springfield XD .40) and energized me to take action on polishing the last line of defense of my divine rights, as well as participate in the Appleseed Project. Aside from an an in depth firearm reference, Boston T. Party provides a fresh, common sense approach to libertarian philosophy. It's a straight foward, practical look at, as "free" people, where we came from, where we are, how we got here, and what to expect to expect in the future. I recommend this book to everyone. After a year of owning it, I still pick it up and re-read excerpts on a regular basis. I hope to see an updated version one of these days, discussing the progress made in .308 battle rifles like the SCAR-H, TAR-21 and many other MBRs over the last few years.

If there is a more complete book on the subject of firearms, I haven't found it yet.

Legal considerations, tactics and training, reviews of equipment( by someone who put some serious reasoning behind his opinions), tips on buying and selling, and more.

But what makes this book especially stand out is the thorough discussion of freedom and the mind set of a free person. And the chilling look at the challenges we face and what to do . Even if you don't own a gun ( and how could you read this book and not find his enthusiasm infectious), if you have ever weighed the idea of gun control the discussion here will stretch your brain.

Could not recommend it more highly.

What a page turner!!!

I have been buying books from Amazon for over a decade now, and my purchases have been based largely on the reviews. I have never written a review nor felt the responsibility to do so until now.

Boston's Gun Bible will be one of the MOST IMPORTANT books you will EVER read, and it needs to be read now!

I'm a college grad, live in a big city, and voted for our current president (huuuuge mistake). After there was no "Change" I started to "Wake Up". Well friends I am now "WIde Awake and On Board"!

A year ago I never owned a firearm, much less knew how to load one. I didn't know about caliber, effective ranges, or carbines vs battle rifles, etc. Frankly, I never felt the need to own one. I didn't understand why we need them. Now I will fight tooth and nail for our Second Amendment.

LISTEN UP Americans, whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, in order for free men to remain free, they MUST be armed! How can anyone argue against History? ALL OF THE ANSWERS ARE THERE in history. There is a reason that Polish Jews were easily marched off to concentration camps. They were UN-ARMED! Ever hear of a a Swiss Jew in a concentration camp? No? Well, the reason is, THEY WERE ARMED, and the Swiss people STILL ARE!!!

Boston's Gun Bible is packed (800 Pages) with a history and review of tons of firearms, a lot of history in reference to firearms, and a lesson in the failures that we have become as Americans, along with what we can do to secure a free country for our children.

I have bought a half dozen of these books and given them to friends/family, and HIGHLY recommend that you pick one up for yourself before our government decides you shouldn't have it, "for your own protection" of course.

An ABSOLUTE must for all men to remain free, not just Americans!

I have bought three of Boston's books within the past three years and consider them among the most important I own. I have read each through at least twice and refer back to them often. My wife chides me: "Do you read the "real" Bible this often?" I only wish I had encountered Boston earlier, since the education I've gained would have helped me make better choices.
BGB has much to offer anyone with interest in guns. Particularly, his books concern the use of guns the way the 2nd Amendment was intended. That said, there's more to do here with defense than hunting. Gun and equipment reviews, political and historical essays, how-to information regarding buying and selling, all with the object of helping restore our country into a nation of riflemen. It's also an excellent resource for other books and gun related sources.
If you buy one book about guns, this is it.

Boston has given us a great manual on firearms which should be on every gun owners shelf next to the writings of Massad Ayoob and the late Jeff Cooper. Just the links alone are worth the cost of the book. As a result I've just acquired my MBR, and am culling my collection for funds to add a CQBC. A year from now, when the 2008 election nears, we will all be grateful for what Boston has taught us and what we've done with it (Luke 22:36). Boston is the writer for all who would rather die on their feet than live on their knees.

Along the way, Boston confronts us-in a polite way-to walk our talk and give more than lip service to the groups who continue to work in the trenches to protect our first freedom.

His novel "Molon Labe" is also a must read. More punch than "Atlas Shrugged" and about 200 less pages of meaningless romantic swooning of a modern woman into the arms of an industrial manly man. Buy everything this man sells so he can take time off to write a sequel to Molon Labe!

The previous reviewers focus on technical details, of which there are many. Boston the man shines through. He admits his prejudices about certain weapons and explains why. He gently answers a letter from a female student at Columbine high school in which he definitively and gently refutes the emotional response she has to gun control. His approach is gentle and fact based. Boston, is first and foremost a man who can be trusted to tell you the truth as he sees it, then he allows you to make your own decision. You can trust this man with your life, you wife and your money and not be abused. Heavy and effusive praise, yes; am I relative or friend, no, though I would be proud to call a man such as this my friend.

Overall a great book. Some of the legislative facts are a bit off. IE NH does allow private sales of firearms. Open carry in a vehicle is legal. Mostly great information. Get the book and train with the right items.

This book is nothing short of awesome! It's great stuff from beginning to end and you'll hardly notice it's somewhere around a thousand pages thick! Boston manages to cover all aspects of the battle rifle, basic defensive pistol use, battle carbines, and more.

Boston's huge amount of experience and field use of these weapons really shows through and the data and rankings of those rifles is spot on. He goes into a lot of things that many of those who are considered "gun nuts" miss and makes fun of one of my favorite kinds of person: the over-accessorizer; the guy who has a fine rifle and then fills it up with extra grips, a too-large scope, an integral bipod, laser pointer, interchangeable buttstock, etc., etc... Yet can't hit a fifty-cent grouping at 50 yards...

Boston also includes a lot of great political commentary and information. He gives (no doubt accurate) predictions of what the lobbyists and gun-grabbers will go for next and how they'll succeed first in the near future. He explains definitively why we need to be armed and TRAINED in those arms to effectively defend our nation, way of life, and especially our liberty.

By far one of the most informed patriots and easily one of our nation's most learned gun nuts, Boston is worth reading.

Boston takes a lot of guessing out of many question's related to gun's. In today's uncertain time, Boston keeps things in perspective. This is not a buy another "TACTICAL" multi-thousand dollar 1911 and AR 'cause that's what so-in-so "SWAT OPERATORS" use. It is, however, an honest thought provoking book that every serious gun owning American should read and reference to.

no disrespect to the 1911 or the AR15, They are fine battle implements.

This is the book to open the door into the world of firearms, and take with you on the whole trip. I have two well worn copies as look up references and enjoyable general reading. While a first read will keep you entertained and get you a general sense of "this bad, that good," the details and support are all there for you as you grow in your understanding -- you just didn't know what you were reading the first time. That process is the most enjoyable kind of book learning there is. Just don't spend so much time reading you forget to go to the range.

I have read Boston before and had come back to revisit this book after the new edition.

Boston writes in the most readable style available and the pages fly by. He methodically goes through tests on different guns, ammo, ballistics, optics, and a whole lot more.

If you liked Boston's other books, this one's also going to have a very dog-eared place by your nitestand.

Boston solved the debate between .223 vs .308 as well as 9mm vs .45 by showing you the reasons to choose the most you can handle. I was offended at first read because I've always been partial to .223 but his explanations on being a "rifleman" convinced me to go the .308 route. He has a hell of an argument there.

The final 3rd of the book is the finest reading for any freedom lovers anywhere... I won't spoil it.

No matter what you know or don't know about guns you will come away more enlightened than before you began. This book will help you decide on what armorments you should be looking at, it might even be a good book to give to educate a gun fearing liberal friend.



A minor complaint is the preponderance of acronyms that don't appear in the acronym index in the front of the book. Not much of a beef of a 900 page tome. It still gets 5 stars!

Having purchased and read Boston's Gun Bible a little over a year ago, I have found myself using it as a valuable quick reference book many times over the past year. This is a book which one should read cover to cover as soon as it is acquired. In fact, if you love information on guns, tactics, ancillary equipment, legal caveats, and political insights, then you will, like me, be unable to put this book down before you have finished reading it. But, having read through it once, you will find yourself wanting to keep this book handy for quick references or just interesting quick re-reads of sections of particular interest. I have enjoyed this book so much, and found it so valuable, that I have purchased and given several copies to family members and friends, all of whom have seemed equally enthusiastic about the book. A very highly recommended read.

Ill be honest, not everyone can read this book until the spine breaks (ive had to buy a second copy after a friend of mine gave my dad a copy because of that very reason) but its important to read it for all its information. He mentions legal advise (which is important even for the kindest souls in the wrong place at the wrong time), technical facts, and opinions based off of technical facts in regards to equipment and training. His politics are hard to think about for most of us as he bluntly opposes some things that even i agree with. He covers a lot of bases very quickly, and because of that youll probably wind up buying other books in the fields that you find most vital to you which is good because conflicting opinions and multiple forms of the same concept deepen understanding. His writing is wonderful in my opinion. This is because he uses a casual tone and it feels often like youre speaking to a buddy more than a professional consultant.

This books is a must for those who desire to be informed politically as well as those who wish to obtain brief overviews of rifles from historical to current times. This is a book one would want to share with those who like to "know" what's happening!

Boston has added greatly to his 1998 work "Guns and Courage" in this new book. I found it to be very useful and a fine addition to the rest of the Boston series. There is much more info added to the reviews on MBR's and carbines, and as always, written in his no nonsense, tell it like it is, style. My copy is making it's rounds among friends now, and I am sure most of them will be wanting their own copies. Order one up today !

This was my first "Boston" book and worth every penny. I am rushing right out to order some of his other titles.

This book is about selecting firearms to do certain jobs and anyone thinking of selecting one or more weapons for home defense or survival would do well to read this book before they spend a penny on their next firearm. Boston discusses the various settings for when you'll need different firearms and he thoroughly covers the pros and cons on many of the most popular choices of firearms. It was also refreshing to hear someone say that you might not need to go out and buy the most expensive gun on the market (not that most of the readers of this book will want anything LESS than the best though). My eyes were opened to the qualities of a whole class of firearms (military surplus) that I had never considered owning before.

I found this book very helpful in that I had yet to select a specific home defense weapon and had not really figured out what to get in which order. Reading Boston's book was like getting advice from a knowledgeable friend or relative, I can't describe how much I like his writing style. I bought the book to learn, which I did, and to hear the well stated thoughtful opinions of someone that knows a lot about the subject. Boston definitely lets you know where he stands on issues but that was a nice change from so many publications that I've read lately where the authors seemed afraid to take a stand or name names.

I found the pro/ con discussion of the different firearms, the explanation of the confusing laws on the "so called assault weapons" and the fact that Boston named names for good and bad products particularly helpful. My only negative observation of the book and a minor one at that, is the second half of the book seems to rely on an aweful lot of quotes, much of which seems to be preaching to the choir.

I enjoyed this book and expect to refer to it often over the years. Any person interested in making a well informed firearm purchase should own this book.

Unsure why a rifle is almost always better than a shotgun? Want to find out how news folk are almost always wrong about firearms? Or perhaps you just want to know what the arcane terms (7.62x39, trajectory, caliber) really mean. It's all here!
Boston sorts it all in a logical and easily read manner. He follows a logical progression that will leave you as knowledgeable as anyone can be with just 'book larnin'. Even if you believe yourself to be an RKI (reasonably knowledgeable individual), there's still a wealth of information here.

Whether one is a long-time firearms enthusiast, or an interested newbie, this book is the best source for the answers to the questions:

Why should I own a gun?
How should I select which guns to buy?
Why a "battle rifle"?
Which battle rifle would be best for me?
What else do I need to know to be prepared to defend my liberty and security?

There is no single better (nor more entertainingly readable) book to answer these questions.

A "Must Have" for Serious Riflemen

This was my first book by Mr. Royce. I keep referring to his chapters on the M1A/M-14 type rifle and the "Rating the Battle Rifles" as his analysis is very detailed and logical.

The only reason, and I mean "only" reason I don't give this book a higher rating is because all they allow is 5 stars.

Novice and journeyman riflemen and women can use this book every day. It really pays for itself. The only tiny bit of constructive criticism I have is that Mr. Royce did not, for whatever reason, round out his evaluation of the M1A/M-14 type rifle with input from Fulton Armory, Inc.,on receivers (good and bad ones). They've been around for quite awhile and enjoy a sterling reputation in both expertise and customer service. Maybe in the next update?

Best money I've spent on a shooting book in a long time. PS, I'm a long time DCM shooter and retired military, so I've seen quite a few references, both military and civilian.

This book is a "must have" for any freedom loving individual with an interest in firearms. It is primary a rifleman's book, because the rifle is what will keep our freedom, not a handgun.

Complete technical information on all models along with a complete buyers guide on rifles with all the pros and cons. Legal advice and constitutional interpretations as well.

Excellent book!
Long lasting fun.

Should be mandatory reading for all hands! Some are preppers, most arent...that said, we preppers usually have to defend against THE VAST MAJORITY of folks who realize their heads were in the sand....If everybody, staring in highschool, were to be properly educated....problem solved? i believe so. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone even vaguely interested in firearms, but also to those who want to realize the truth about where America is heading today. With no-nonsense reviews, facts, and suggestions, I believe this book will not only be a Gun Bible, but also a Liberty Bible. In the coming years it will be a blueprint for gaining freedom from a socialist government. For all the Americans who believe that real patriotism goes beyond just putting an American flag sticker on your car, this and all other books by Boston T. Party are required reading.

Tremendous amount of information for Novice and seasoned Firearms enthusiasts. Alot of MUST KNOW information for even non firearms owners. Although sometimes the author admits a bias on certain subjects; he explains his reasons. Offers alot of information on weapons, calibers, laws and whole hearted views of how Politics has shaped firearm ownership in America. How disarmament has affected other countries. Recommendations on concealed carry and weapons ownership and laws that affect such. An incredible "eye-opener" into reality. Thank you.

BGB is a well written and very well done successor to the classic survivalist firearms book, Survival Guns by the late Mel Tappan.

This is a book that people need to read before purchasing any type of firearm. I do not know anything about the author. The author, of course, has stated what he thinks is preferable and why. Take that with a grain of salt.

Is the author right about his views and pronouncements? I don't know. I think some of the views could have been presented with more scholarship. I was also disappointed with the technical presentation of the book. It looked liked some pages were pieced together and then photographed.

Whether one agrees with the author or not, the book is thought provoking.

This is not only my favorite gun book ive read. its one of my favorite books period. not my absolute favorite the bibles my favorite but this book is at least second. through this book i learned that you can legaly carry a consealed gun without a license as long as it was made before 1889. im currently looking for one. this book is a great way to learn how to make pro victim disarmament advocates [gun control nuts] and their arguments look as dumb as they are. how insane is it that are government is inforceing unconstitutional and ILLEGAL laws. the second ammendment says clearly. THE RIGHT TO KEEP [own] AND BEAR [carry] ARMS SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED [can not be leagaly canged no ecceptions no responsable gun control [no gun control is responsable] even an ammendment to the constitution banning guns or a certain gun would infringe and would be ILLEGAL] when the house of repusentitives or senate or the president or juges infringe upon are second ammendment rights in my opinion its HIGH TREASON and the penalty for that is death. im not saying to kill them our selves im saying thay should be given a fair trial and if found guilty hannged or leathel injection. ANY LAW BANNING ANY KIND OF GUN IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND ILLEGAL [the constitution is the HIGHEST LAW IN THE LAND] and no one NOT EVEN IF 100% of THE HOUSE OF REPS AND SENATE could pass a law legaly and with out commiting HIGH TREASON that would ban even one type of gun. and if the supreme court upholds a law that infringes upon the second ammendment or any other for that matter [INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO LIFE] its illeagal and i would like to say that the members of the supreme court who held that abortion [murder of the unborn] should be leagal should be charged with high treason and 40 million counts of murder [im not kiding] [more then 40 million babies have been butcherd since roe v. wade thats 3000 to 4000 a day 1.5 million a year]

I am a huge fan of guns, own a lot of them, shoot them whenever I can and recommend that all citizens own guns. Today, I'm going out to shoot with my brothers and brother in law. That being said, I disagree with the author's opinion that you must devote your life to gun ownership and gun proficiency. This simply is not practical for most ordinary people.

Own the guns, shoot them when you can. Integrate them into your life to the extent possible, but realize you are not going to become a rifleman in all likelihood. Familiarity with guns is a good thing, but achieving the level of proficiency he recommends is highly unlikely in most people's lives. Don't sweat it. Don't allow the author to intimidate you or make you ashamed or worst of all, give up altogether on gun ownership because you can't possibly follow his recommendations.

My main objective in reading this book was to get the author's advice on a battle rifle. He ranks the most popular battle rifles employing various criteria including reliability, battle accuracy, ergonomics, affordability etc. Unfortunately, the rifle I like the most, the AR-15 and the AR-10 are ranked last!! The Armalite AR-10 was poised to be first but ranked last in reliability. But the author based his evaluation of the AR-10's reliability on reports on the rifle rather than his own hands on experience.

I wish he'd had more hands on experience with the AR-10 and the DPMS variant to directly address the reliability issue rather than simply declaring that the rifle is not as reliable based on "reports." Admittedly, these rifles, if not maintained carefully, do suffer from reliability issues, but this issue has been largely laid to rest over the years in well maintained guns.

He ranks the M1-A and the FAL variants as number one and two respectively. But darnit, I just LOVE my AR-15 and AR-10.

Read this book with a grain of salt understanding that the author is a certified, dyed in the wool GUN NUT. He would refer to me no doubt as a cook rather than a rifleman (his categories). Well and good. But I am a cook with a gun and make no apologies for not being as proficient as he is. The book provides a wealth of information about all types of guns, the gun culture, self defense and multiple other gun related topics. It is a tremendous resource.
